Car Care Tips for Driving During the Rainy Season
When winter’s rains start to fall, there’s an easy way to remember these top three tips for car care during the rainy season: WWW. Wash, Wheels and Windshield Wipers (ok we’re counting that last one as only one W). Here’s why these three W’s are so important:
While you may think that when it rains that means you get a free car wash, unfortunately that’s not quite true. Rainwater tends to be acidic, which is why every droplet that dries on your car often leaves behind a deposit. Over time, this can take a toll on your car’s paint job as well as its parts, and can eventually result in rust. That means that you should be especially diligent in washing your car when the weather is wet. If you give your car a good wax, that will also provide a nice protective layer causing the rain to bead up and roll off your car once it rains again.
For additional car care during the rainy season, consider inspecting and washing the undercarriage. Grime and water picked up from puddles can lessen the effectiveness of your car’s brakes. Also if water ends up washing away any of your car’s lubrication that can lead to costly repairs. Which is why it pays to keep your car clean (in any season), but particularly during the winter months.
Get into the groove…of frequently checking your car’s tires. The grooves on the tire tread are designed to help your car firmly grip the road, which is especially important when driving through patches of water. If you hit a deep enough pool of water that can lead to scary moments of hydroplaning that could cause you to lose control of your car. So make sure that your tires are not excessively worn because a shallow tire tread can be especially dangerous during the rainy season. It’s also important to keep your car’s wheels properly inflated as well as clean (going back to the previous point), because if your tires’ grooves are filled with mud and grit, their effectiveness can be compromised.
This one may seem like the most obvious tip, but it’s often one that is neglected and goes unnoticed until they’re needed. When it comes to car care during the rainy season, it’s best to be proactive, so make sure that your windshield wipers are replaced (ideally this should be done every year) and that your wiper fluid is filled. Going back to our first point, keeping your windshield clean and your wipers working properly will improve your visibility when it’s raining.
